Lighting the scene is a huge task and it could easily be what makes or breaks the visuals. In this case I had to undergo through a lot of changes and tweaking to achieve the final look.
I wanted to have a natural looking scene, with clouds and sun light. In theory this could be achieved in many different ways; having particles for the clouds which would increase render times dramatically, having a sphere with the cloud texture is another option, however it would be very difficult to make it look realistic as the colors of the sky, sun and clouds would not be reflecting up on the objects. So after lots of researching I discovered how to create my own sky box in Maya, which would act as a real physical sky.

Here we have a very moody and depressing look, as much as I liked it, I also felt that it looked too washed without the highlights from the sun.
I wanted to add neon lights to break up the materials, however this had to be dropped as the render times more than tripled.
So instead of lights I decided to use Ceramic Mental Ray material.
