Character Development - Artis Silins

Started off with a moodboard to gather ideas for the armour and look of the guards. Wanted a futuristic look to fit in with the theme but with a ancient roman background.

These are silhouettes, that got developed before I decided on developin gmy final choice further, as shown below.

Ship Progression and Final Build - Mantis / Ahmed

So as me and mantas were both designing and building the ship, we decided to go out to collect some primary source materials. Our ideas were running short from using referenced material so we thought this was best. We visited the RAF museum trying to pick out anything particular we liked about the aircrafts that we saw and focusing on details that we would want to include on our own ship.

We really liked the engine jets at the back of the f16 above and thought it could add an interesting look to our ship.

The weapon housing on this plane looked very simple which appealed to us.

This air craft just simply looked very monstrous and epic. We liked everything about this aircraft from the missile like nose of the craft to the verticle alligned jets at the back, shown below.

The streamlined and aerodynamic look of the cockpit in the photo above was a look we were interested in.

The back of this particular plane seemed quite interesting and something we would maybe want to include within our own design.

We went through a process of continuously going back and fourth, each time developing and further enhancing our model to look the best it possibly could. Below are some initial starting points where some were developed and others were not, before we came to our final design.

Above is a ship concept I attempted to develop but it didn't turn out how I wanted it to. I used photo manipulating techniques to try and incorporate design from other photos, layered on each other and then paint on top. - Ahmed

This is something I blocked out and beveled to get a starting point and to see if we liked the general look and feel of the ship. The bigger cubes were meant for Jets and the inner cubes for weapon housing. We felt this didn't seem to fit into our scene as well as we'd of liked so I didn't develop this further. - Ahmed

These are assets that were built for another ship as shown below. I focused on the weapon housing, jets and wings, whilst Mantas focused on the main body of the ship and how everything would fit together.

Above is what we managed to get together yet we still were unhappy with the outcome. Referring back to our research, and using parts of the air crafts we really liked to influence our design, we came up with our final ship, shown below:

Modelling, Rigging, Skinning Main Character - Mantas

As Artis continued with the development for the outlook of the guards, I went on to model our main character and rig, ready for use.

Background Concepts & Ideas - Mantas

Thinking about the kind of background we wanted around our set, I designed these concept Ideas as part of a research and design process.

Progression - Anamatic, Storyboard and Development process

Progress - Artas Silins

Aircraft Ideas/Assets - Mantis & Ahmed

These are the jet engines that go onto the back of the ship, being a part of the film for a few seconds at the beginning requiring it to be quite detailed. Mantas had suggested that we needed a cargo but fighter looking ship and so thought that a pair of Jets at the back would work really nicely. I had gone away and worked on the jets, referring back to a reference.

Leaving Mantas to model the body of the ship, according to our design principles I modelled propeller wings that would allow the aircraft to lift off the ground and settle down. These were designed with no reference material but through my own concepts and thought process.

Just another shot of the propellers of the ship.

I had begun modelling a base for a gun to be placed on the top of the ship that is still in progress. As a group we wanted the ship to have a big standing ground in the film at the beginning and a big gun always makes a big statement. That the state is powerful (as the gladiator is being sent to the state for his fight/death).

Mantas created the body of the ship, inspired by a military helicopter, hence the design and shape of the ship. This also enforced other decisions we made such as using propellers on the wings for lift off etc.

This is the semi-final version of the ship with all of our assets and designs put together. Once we had the main set and the ship which are relatively the main parts needed for our film, I carried on with storyboarding and focusing on types of shots that would best tell our story. I had worked back and fourth with mantas getting ideas as to what he might like to see as well as Artis and fed off those ideas to try and implement them into the storyboard, which is shown below:
